"AFP stands in solidarity with all the media whose offices were destroyed in Gaza," said AFP Chairman Fabrice Fries. "All parties involved in the conflict need to respect the media's freedom to report on events."
"We are profoundly shocked the offices of media organisations would be targeted in this way," said AFP's Global News Director Phil Chetwynd.
Held at the Centro Cultural Penedo da Saudade, the exhibition brings together 41 of AFP's top images of events that have recently shaken the US: the storming of the Capitol by Donald Trump's supporters, the Black Lives Matter protests, and the siege at the Michigan statehouse amongst others. Featuring images from 21 photographers, it is one of eight large-format present at the photojournalism festival, which will culminate with the Estação Imagem Award.
Shanghai-based photographer Hector Retamal won first prize in the Excellence in Photography category at the 2021 Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) awards announced Thursday, while Beijing-based video journalist Leo Ramirez was runner-up in the Excellence in Video Reporting category.
Jeff Pachoud won the Grand Prix as well as first prize for his black and white “best of “ selection from the Tour De France. His entry was called “My Tour”.
It is with deep shock and sadness that AFP learned of the tragic death of Reuters photojournalist Danish Siddiqui – killed during a clash between Afghan security forces and Taliban fighters near the Afghan border with Pakistan.
A highly respected and admired journalist, and a Pulitzer Prize-winner, Danish was well known to many AFP staff – both in India where has was based and also across the agency’s wider network.
He won the prize, one of the most prestigious in journalism, for his picture of a girl screaming in the aftermath of a suicide attack in Kabul in December 2011.
